iii. Before The King's Daughters;
1679 Conviction for Incest; Text
On 07 September 1679, Jean was convicted of incest, “having had carnal copulation with one of his daughters and for attempting to ravish the honor of the other two.”149 His trial on this charge was a first in New France. At first, he was sentenced by the Montréal court to undergo the question extraordinaire to produce a confession, then hanging in the market square of Montréal until he was dead. In addition, all his property was to be seized. Jean appealed this sentence and the Conseil Souverain rejected the appeal, but commuted the sentence to banishment from within a 30-league radius of the Isle of Montréal for life.; [Source Record]
